Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling, as entry requirements may change.
Sierra Leone, located on the West African coast, welcomes international visitors for tourism, business, and other purposes. The country has implemented an electronic visa system to streamline the entry process for most travelers. All visitors must obtain proper authorization before arrival, either through the online visa application system or at a Sierra Leonean embassy or consulate. Upon arrival at Freetown's Lungi International Airport or other ports of entry, travelers will undergo immigration and customs procedures. It is essential to have all required documentation ready, including a valid passport, visa confirmation, proof of yellow fever vaccination, and supporting documents such as return tickets and accommodation details. The immigration process is generally straightforward for those with proper documentation. Travelers should be aware that Sierra Leone has specific health requirements, particularly regarding yellow fever vaccination, which is mandatory for all visitors. It is strongly recommended to apply for visas well in advance of travel and to verify current requirements with official Sierra Leonean authorities, as immigration policies can change. Ensure your passport has at least six months validity from your intended date of entry and sufficient blank pages for stamps.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Sierra Leone requires most international visitors to obtain a visa before travel. The country operates an electronic visa (eVisa) system for eligible nationalities, while citizens of ECOWAS member states enjoy visa-free access. Traditional visa applications through embassies are also available for those who prefer or require this option.

Visa-Free Entry
Up to 90 days

Citizens of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) member countries can enter Sierra Leone without a visa

Includes

ECOWAS nationals must still carry valid travel documents and may need to show proof of yellow fever vaccination. Stay duration may vary; verify current regulations before travel.

Electronic Visa (eVisa)
Typically 30 days single entry or 90 days multiple entry, depending on visa type

Most international travelers can apply for an electronic visa online before traveling to Sierra Leone

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand All EU countries China India South Africa Kenya Most other countries not listed in visa-free category
How to Apply: Apply online through the official Sierra Leone eVisa portal (www.immigration.gov.sl). Processing typically takes 3-5 business days. Upload required documents including passport copy, passport photo, yellow fever certificate, and travel itinerary. Print the approved eVisa and present it upon arrival.
Cost: Approximately $80-160 USD depending on visa type (single or multiple entry) and processing speed. Fees are subject to change.

Apply at least 7-10 days before travel. Ensure all uploaded documents are clear and meet specifications. The eVisa must be printed and presented at immigration along with your passport.

Visa on Arrival
N/A

Sierra Leone previously offered visa on arrival but this has been largely discontinued in favor of the eVisa system

How to Apply: Visa on arrival is generally not available. All travelers should obtain an eVisa or embassy visa before travel. In exceptional circumstances, some business travelers with official invitations may be able to arrange special authorization.

Do not rely on obtaining a visa on arrival. Always secure your visa before traveling to avoid entry denial and deportation.

Embassy/Consulate Visa
Typically 30-90 days depending on visa type requested

Traditional visa applications can be submitted at Sierra Leonean embassies or consulates for those who prefer this method or are unable to apply online

How to Apply: Contact the nearest Sierra Leone embassy or consulate. Submit completed application form, passport (valid for at least 6 months), passport photos, yellow fever certificate, invitation letter or hotel reservation, and proof of sufficient funds. Processing time varies from 5-15 business days.

This option is useful for those requiring longer stays, work visas, or who have difficulty with online applications. Fees are similar to eVisa costs but may vary by location.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Lungi International Airport (Freetown) or other ports of entry, all travelers must pass through immigration and customs control. The process is generally efficient for those with proper documentation. Be prepared for health screening, particularly yellow fever vaccination verification, before proceeding to immigration.

1
Health Screening
Present your yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for all travelers). Health officials may conduct temperature checks or other health screenings depending on current health protocols.
2
Immigration Control
Queue at the immigration desk and present your passport, printed eVisa or visa stamp, and completed arrival card (usually provided on the flight). The immigration officer will verify your documents, may ask questions about your visit, and stamp your passport with entry permission.
3
Baggage Claim
Collect your checked luggage from the baggage carousel. Verify all bags are accounted for before proceeding to customs.
4
Customs Declaration
Complete a customs declaration form if required. Proceed through the appropriate customs channel (goods to declare or nothing to declare). Customs officers may inspect luggage and ask questions about items you are bringing into the country.
5
Exit Airport
After clearing customs, exit to the arrivals area. Be prepared for transportation to Freetown city center, which requires a ferry or helicopter transfer from Lungi Airport.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay with at least 2 blank pages for stamps. Original passport required; photocopies not accepted.
Visa Documentation
Printed eVisa approval or visa stamp in passport. Keep digital and physical copies accessible throughout your journey.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
Mandatory for all travelers regardless of origin country. Must be the official International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card). Vaccination must be at least 10 days old before arrival.
Return/Onward Ticket
Proof of departure from Sierra Leone, either return ticket or onward travel to another destination. May be requested by immigration officers.
Accommodation Confirmation
Hotel reservation, invitation letter from host, or address where you will be staying in Sierra Leone. Immigration may ask for this information.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Evidence you can financially support yourself during your stay (bank statements, credit cards, cash). Not always requested but advisable to have available.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Arrive with all documents organized and easily accessible in a travel folder. This speeds up the immigration process significantly.
Keep your yellow fever vaccination certificate in your passport at all times, as it may be checked multiple times during your journey.
Have small denomination USD or local currency (Leones) ready for any airport fees or transportation costs immediately upon arrival.
Be polite and patient with immigration and customs officers. Answer questions clearly and honestly.
Make copies of all important documents (passport, visa, vaccination certificate) and store them separately from originals. Also keep digital copies in cloud storage.
Plan your transportation from Lungi Airport in advance. The airport is across the bay from Freetown, requiring ferry, water taxi, or helicopter transfer.
Dress modestly and professionally when going through immigration to make a good impression.
If you encounter any issues, remain calm and ask to speak with a supervisor. Contact your embassy if serious problems arise.

Customs & Duty-Free

Health Requirements

Sierra Leone has specific health requirements for all entering travelers, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. All visitors must comply with vaccination requirements and should take recommended health precautions for travel to West Africa.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Mandatory for all travelers aged 9 months and older, regardless of country of origin. The vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. You must present the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) at entry; without it, you may be vaccinated at the airport, quarantined, or denied entry.

  • COVID-19 - Follow current recommendations for vaccination and boosters

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended for all travelers to Sierra Leone. Medical facilities are limited, especially outside Freetown, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to another country. Ensure your insurance covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Some insurers exclude certain countries or regions, so verify Sierra Leone is covered. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers accessible at all times.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly, particularly regarding COVID-19 and other emerging infectious diseases. Check the latest requirements 2-3 weeks before travel and again within 72 hours of departure. Requirements may include pre-departure testing, quarantine, health declarations, or additional vaccinations. Visit the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health website, your country's travel health advisory service (such as CDC for US travelers or NHS for UK travelers), and consult a travel medicine clinic 4-6 weeks before departure. Malaria is endemic in Sierra Leone; antimalarial medication is strongly recommended for all travelers.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passports and visas (including eVisa). Yellow fever vaccination is required for children 9 months and older; younger infants may need a medical exemption letter. Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s), including contact information and authorization for the child to travel. This letter should be in English and include copies of the absent parents' identification. Unaccompanied minors require special documentation and advance arrangement with airlines. Keep copies of children's birth certificates accessible.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Sierra Leone requires advance planning and documentation. You will need: an import permit from the Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security (apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel); a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel confirming the pet is healthy and free from infectious diseases; proof of current rabies vaccination (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel); and a microchip for identification (recommended). Some airlines have specific requirements for pet travel. Quarantine may be required upon arrival depending on documentation. Contact the Ministry of Agriculture well in advance: +232-22-224-930. Note that facilities for pets are limited in Sierra Leone.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30-90 days. For longer stays, you must apply for a visa extension through the Immigration Department in Freetown before your current visa expires. Extensions are not guaranteed and require justification (employment, education, family, etc.). Bring your passport, current visa, passport photos, application form, and supporting documentation explaining the reason for extension. Processing takes 5-10 business days and fees apply. For stays longer than 6 months, you may need to register with immigration and obtain a residence permit. Work visas, student visas, and business visas have separate requirements and must be arranged through sponsors in Sierra Leone or Sierra Leonean embassies abroad. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans.

Business Travelers

Business travelers should apply for a business visa (available as eVisa or through embassy), which may allow multiple entries and longer stays than tourist visas. Required documents include an invitation letter from the Sierra Leonean company or organization you will be visiting, stating the purpose and duration of visit. Some business activities may require additional permits or registration with relevant government ministries. Keep all business-related documentation accessible during your stay. If conducting business involving contracts, investments, or employment, consult with legal advisors familiar with Sierra Leone law.

Dual Nationals

Travelers holding dual nationality, including Sierra Leonean citizenship, should be aware that Sierra Leone recognizes dual citizenship. However, you must enter and exit Sierra Leone using your Sierra Leonean passport if you hold one, even if you also hold another nationality. Attempting to enter on a foreign passport while holding Sierra Leonean citizenship may cause complications. If you were born in Sierra Leone or have Sierra Leonean parents, verify your citizenship status before travel. Contact a Sierra Leone embassy for clarification on your status and documentation requirements.

Journalists and Media

Journalists, photographers, and film crews must obtain special accreditation from the Sierra Leone Ministry of Information and Communications before arrival. Apply well in advance (at least 4-6 weeks) with detailed information about your assignment, crew members, equipment, and filming locations. Unauthorized journalistic activities can result in detention, equipment confiscation, and deportation. Even tourist photographers using professional equipment should declare it at customs. Filming in certain areas (government buildings, military installations, airports) is prohibited without special permission.
